Virtual Machines

With all the benefits of a regular dedicated server, a virtual machine (VM) from Dedi provides additional features, primarily suited to developers and websites or applications that plan to scale significantly, or that need levels of redundancy and failover that a dedicated machine cannot provide.

Some of the benefits of a VM include:

Scalable Infrastructure

Resize your VM as and when your demands change. Resizing modifies the disk space, CPU and RAM allocation, and takes just minutes to complete.

Each block allocated to your VM consists of 600Mhz CPU, 376MB RAM, 250GB of monthly transfer and 10GB storage space. Blocks can be moved between multiple VMs, so there's no need to purchase additional blocks if you'd rather take them from an existing VM.

The scalability of the platform ensures that you can tweak your VM allocation to get the best performance for the best price.

Redundancy and Failover

Our virtual machines have the ability to switch to another host machine if the current host experiences issues.

In all but the most extreme cases, this switch occurs within 3-5 minutes of a failover being detected by the automated monitoring systems.

  • RAID-10 SAN data storage
  • Instant OS reloads
  • Instant power controls (shutdown/reboot/power on)
  • Optional daily, weekly and monthly system backups
  • Emergency console
  • Bandwidth and CPU graphs
  • UK or US locations
  • A selection of Linux distributions

How do I decide?

Choosing between a virtual machine or a dedicated server can be difficult, so here are a few points to help you decide. If you're still unsure, you are welcome to get in touch and we can assist you.

Dedicated Server

dedicated machines
  • Ideal for websites or applications that demand the most resources or power
  • May be less cost-effective than an equivalent virtual machine
  • Redundancy and failover require another server of equivalent specification
  • Flexibility to scale is difficult and requires scheduled maintenance

Virtual Machine

virtual machines
  • Capable of running websites or applications of all sizes
  • May be more cost-effective than an equivalent dedicated server
  • Provides superior redundancy and failover
  • Scaling is fast and easy, and can be accomplished within minutes
